I got out the Ripper flattening bit from High Country Tools to flatten this piece of curly sapele so I can get it ready for carving a catchall tray. I just use the Xbox controller to run the spindle over the wood for each pass. I flatten one side and then flip it over and do the other side the same way. Double sided machining is not as difficult to set up as you might think. Many people are intimidated by it, but in reality, you just need to create location holes in the top side of your work piece and mirrored holes in the wasteboard using some dowels as location pins. Once your piece is secured back down using new screw hole locations, your x and y zero locations stay the same and you're ready to start cutting on the opposite side. It's a pretty easy process!
